Scam Prevention Guide

A reddit report about a impersonation scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

Trying to understand if I just avoided a scam or if I was being unreasonable here, appreciate any feedback. I’m selling my car (Audi A4 2. 0T Quattro) and listed it on Facebook marketplace. A local woman contacted me. Her profile is a picture of her (can’t see face, only back, Caucasian blonde) and a banner shot of four children. No other info or posts visible on the profile, but the AI says it’s 15 years old and there were two sales of furniture with high rating. She asks to see the car within an hour of messaging me - I say I’m not free but we schedule a time next day. Also asks for VIN (which I provide). She says if she can’t make it her fiancĆ© would meet me. Next day comes and I meet him at a grocery store parking lot. He’s in some high end BMW sedan. Immediately I’m a bit suspicious of his vibe, seems a little unfriendly and slightly aggressive, asking me about the car history, any damage, etc. also has an accent, maybe middle eastern? Asks for a test drive and I ask to see and take a photo of his license. He lets me see it but doesn’t agree to the photo (and looks like he is out of state). That was my red flag and I declined progressing further and left. The whole thing didn’t feel right to me. I immediately get a message back saying that my expectations are unreasonable and I’d never sell the car, and they blocked me. Reflecting more on it, I wonder - why would a presumably divorced mom of four young kids want such a kid unfriendly sports sedan? Maybe she’s a car enthusiast, who am I to judge? But seems improbable.
