Romance Scam Story

A reddit report about a romance scam that cost someone Amount not specified. Learn how to avoid falling victim.

I was looking for a cheap camper van, and saw a lovely one on Facebook Marketplace, not too far from me (funny how that always happens, isn't it?) I got in touch, and everything seemed mostly ok. It turns out the vehicle was actually in the south of England, nowhere near me, but they can do transportation. I could let that slide, advertising in multiple areas to get a greater audience is a bit scummy, but forgivable. I asked for some more pictures of the inside, these were never provided. Go through the contract stuff, 10 day moneyback guarantee if you aren't happy with the vehicle, so looking good so far. The company itself has been on Companies House for over 10 years. Get to the payment bit, first red flag, the account is in a completely different name, one which happens to have been the director of a transport company that was dissolved last year. Second red flag, they suggest using a Friends and Family option for bank transfer, to make sure things go through quickly. I started digging, no whois response on the email domain for the person I have been contacting. No other online presence for the company itself. I decided to back away, maybe I missed out on a good deal, but there were just too many warnings. Anything more I could have done?
